Next Steps for Feed the Truth

By Jim Krieger, Board Chair, Feed the Truth

March 21, 2019

In 2017, when Feed the Truth was initially conceptualized, funded, and launched by Daniel Lubetzky, an entrepreneur best known for creating the snack company KIND, it was charged with a weighty and multifaceted mission: to improve public health by making truth, transparency, equity and integrity the foremost values in today’s food system.

I, and my fellow board of directors, believe in the potential of Feed the Truth to reveal and counteract the forces that seek to influence nutrition policy, spread misinformation, and undermine sound nutrition science, forces that lead to a food system that creates disease rather than supports health. We believe that Feed the Truth will move us towards a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable food system.

During the first two years, Feed the Truth has spent time seeking to understand how best to activate on this mission – the process was not easy, and it was time-consuming. Today, I am proud to report that that is no longer the case. In recent months, Feed the Truth has made great strides. Six public health leaders and experts have come together to form a board of directors. This group includes:

  • Mara Fleishman, CEO, Chef Ann Foundation

  • Tracy Fox, MPH, RD, founder and president, Food Nutrition & Policy Consultants, LLC

  • Jim Krieger, MD, MPH (Board Chair), founding executive director, Healthy Food America and Clinical Professor of Medicine and Health Services, University of Washington

  • Dariush Mozaffarian, MD, PhD, Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition, Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University

  • Michael Roberts, JD Executive Director, Resnick Center for Food Law and Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law

  • Angie Tagtow, MS, RD, LD, Founder and Chief Strategist, Äkta Strategies, LLC

As we’ve begun work to build a comprehensive strategy for Feed the Truth, one thing has become abundantly clear: we need a professional leader who is willing to take the reins and work with us to develop a strategy and translate it into reality through bold actions.

That’s why we’ve launched a search for Feed the Truth’s first executive director. The ideal candidate will be a fierce advocate for healthy people and communities, while also possessing the experience and ability to build a groundbreaking organization from the ground up.  If you are a visionary social entrepreneur with a passion for health, nutrition, and equity – or you know someone who is – check out the job description:

While we’re excited to be taking these next steps, we know that these are the first of many steps required to achieve our vision.

Going forward, I’ll do my best to uphold Feed the Truth’s steadfast commitment to transparency by sharing progress updates. Please check back, and if you ever have questions or thoughts on how to build a better food system, please share them with
